Welcome to Year 2
Miss Childs - Cormorant class, Mrs Hambidge and Mrs Jennings - Sandpiper class, Miss Tobin - Guillemot class and Year Leader, Miss Murphy -Kittiwake class and Mrs Meldrum - pupil premium support.
This half term we have been so busy exploring the wonderful world around us. We are incredibly lucky to live in such a beautiful part of the world and we have been making the most of the opportunities this presents to us.
Year 2 have been discovering mini-beasts and investigating their microhabitats. We have also spent a long time exploring different plants and trees within the local area, including our school garden... ask us which ones we spotted!
We have investigated life cycles and displayed our knowledge of this in a chosen way... look out around school to see them on display!
This week we have been researching a chosen minibeast and we will use our knowledge to create a natural microhabitat for the school garden. Check back for updates soon!
Year 2 have been working extremely hard on their 2, 5 and 10 times tables and on Wednesday lunchtimes they have been quizzed by the Maths Magician!
If they are successful, they receive a pin badge and a certificate in Superstar assembly and if they achieve all 3 badges... they receive 5 ladder points!
What a busy term we have had! We started with a visit to Poole Quay to identify Human and Physical features within our local area. Shortly after that we were so excited to fly to Africa and visit Arusha! We tried many different fruits, visited a local school, danced and practised making music using djembe drums.
Once we landed back in Hamworthy it was back to work finding out more about Arusha. We discovered just how different it is from Poole, although there were some similarities too!
We've explored the Arctic and Antarctica. We compared the climate there to our own and to that in Arusha. One of our favourite learning activities was to research animals that live in a hot climate and those who are designed to live in a cold climate. We also practised our skills in creating line, shape and form to sketch the animals in our special art books.
This half term we have started studying the artist Damien Hirst and how he uses pattern and colour to create particular effects in his work. We'll be continuing this during our next topic "What's Outside my Window?".
In Year 2 we have PE on Mondays and Wednesdays. Please ensure your child does not wear earrings on these days if they are unable to remove them independently.
Each Friday the children will have a piece of homework to complete, please could all homework be returned by the following Wednesday.
There will be a Year 2 meeting on Friday 28th September at 9am where we will share the curriculum with you. Hope to see you there.
Thank you for your continued support,
Miss Tobin, Miss Childs, Mrs Hambidge, Mrs Jennings and Miss Murphy
